چکیده

SUMMARY An evaluation of prospective shale gas reservoir intervals in the Bowland Shale is presented using a wireline log data set from UK's first exploration well. Accurate identification such crucial determining ideal landing zones for drilling horizontal production wells, but task challenging due to heterogeneous nature mudrocks. This heterogeneity leads stratigraphic variations quality and mechanical properties, complex geophysical behaviour, including seismic anisotropy. We generate petrophysical logs as mineralogy, porosity, organic content calibrate these results core studies. If ‘reservoir quality’ defined by combined cut-offs relating parameters, we find that over 100 m present well, located primarily within upper section. To examine link between signature rock an isotropic physics model developed, effective medium theories, recreate elastic properties produce forward-looking templates subsequent inversion mineralogical has profound impact on modelled obscuring more discrete changes water saturation best bear distinctive response cross-plots. Finally, consider density natural fractures developing anisotropic reflect high-angle observed micro-imagery logs. invert crack shear wave splitting well up 4 per cent which correlates with observations. Our work further supports previous authors’ core-based studies concluding holds good characteristics, propose there are multiple could be targeted stacked should those intervals’ also suitable adequate stress barriers restrict vertical hydraulic fracture growth. our may provide useful tools interpreting pre-stack sets areas picking locations wells.

Rock physics characterization of shale reservoirs: a case study

Unconventional resources are typically very complex to model, and the production from this type of reservoirs is influenced by such complexity in their microstructure. This microstructure complexity is normally reflected in their geophysical response, and makes them more difficult to interpret. Rock physics play an important role to resolve such complexity by integrating different subsurface di...

A closer look at rock physics models and their assisted interpretation in seismic exploration

Subsurface rocks and their fluid content along with their architecture affect reflected seismic waves through variations in their travel time, reflection amplitude, and phase within the field of exploration seismology. The combined effects of these factors make subsurface interpretation by using reflection waves very difficult. Therefore, assistance from other subsurface disciplines is needed i...

An integrated petrophysical and rock physics analysis to improve reservoir characterization of Cretaceous sand intervals in Middle Indus Basin, Pakistan

The sand intervals of the Lower Goru Formation of the Cretaceous age, widely distributed in the Middle and Lower Indus Basin of Pakistan, are proven reservoirs. However, in the Sawan gas field of the Middle Indus Basin, these sandstone intervals are very deep and extremely heterogeneous in character, which makes it difficult to discriminate lithologies and fluid saturation. Based on petrophysic...

Effects of uncertainty in rock-physics models on reservoir parameter estimation using marine seismic AVA and CSEM data

This study investigates the effects of uncertainty in rockphysics models on estimates of reservoir parameters from joint inversion of seismic AVA and CSEM data. The reservoir parameters are related to electrical resistivity using Archie’s law, and to seismic velocity and density using the Xu-White model. To account for errors in the rock-physics models, we use two methods to handle uncertainty:...
